Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) is one of the three routes of transmission of HIV. There are three channels for MTCT: in uterus, during delivery and during breastfeeding. Without intervention, the incidence of MTCT of HIV is usually between 15% and 50%. It is through PMTCT, caesarean birth and artificial feeding that the infection rate can be reduced  by up to 75%.

Under the careful preparation of Yuyao Health Bureau, the city CDC, the MCH Center and the hospital assumed their responsibilities respectively, and Yuyao No.1 Hospital prepared for the surgery. A HIV-positive pregnant woman from Hunan Province would receive caesarean here. This is the first case of HIV-positive pregnant woman receiving PMTCT as well as the first case of HIV-positive pregnant woman receiving caesarean in Yuyao.

With the guidance of staff from the city CDC and the MCH Center, the woman took ARVs again. Leaders and medical staff at the Medical Division , Obstetrics & Gynecology Division, Operating Room, Division  of Infectious Diseases and Nursing Division of the city No.1 Hospital carefully disinfected the medical appliances and prepared protective articles according to the standard operating procedures. Hospital leaders reiterated that medical staff should not only successfully conduct the surgery and reduce chances of infection, but also ensure their own safety, avoiding occupational exposure.

A 3.2-kilogram girl was born, along with her mother,, she was sent to a special ward an hour later. A caesarean usually takes 50 minutes, but this one took nearly two hours. In the ward, professional workers fed the baby with ARVs. The mother and her families were totally moved into tears, as the medical staff not only showed no discrimination against them, but also cared for them.
