Currently, there are three national key railway and highway construction projects in Tianshui City, including Tianping (Tianshui-Pingliang) Railway, Tianbao (Tianshui-Baoji) Highway, Tianding (Tianshui-Dingxi) Highway, These railway and highways cross five counties/districts in Tianshui City, including Maiji District, Qinzhou District, Qingshui County. A large number of migrants swarm into the city. Most migrants are young adults far away from their hometowns and families. They lack in knowledge about STI/HIV/AIDS prevention, facing the threat of STI/HIV infection due to having high risk behaviors.
Tianshui Program Office has made great efforts to disseminate HIV/AIDS knowledge among migrants in railway/highway sites and construction sites in order to publicize knowledge about HIV/AIDS prevention, raise awareness of such knowledge among migrants and increase their condom use rate.
With effective coordination from Tianshui - Pingliang Railway Project No. 1 Program Management Team of China Railway 21st Bureau Group Co., Ltd., Director Liu Baolu and Deputy Director Fan Duozhi of Tianshui Program Office visited such building sites as Bijiali Tunnel, Guojiaping and Niutoukou Bridge together with staff on July 23, 2009 at high temperature. Program staff disseminated
HIV/AIDS knowledge to more than 100 construction workers, provided on-site VCT and check-up services, and answered questions raised by construction workers. On July 24, 2009, CDC staff visited the Yongsheng Home building site at Weibin East Road of Maiji District to disseminate health knowledge and HIV/AIDS knowledge to more than 100 construction workers and provide them with VCT services.
Condoms, environmental protection shopping bags printed with VCT information, preferential cards of STI clinics and VCT contact cards were distributed. About 120 construction workers received VCT services. These activities were highly welcomed by migrant workers and conducive to increasing HIV/AIDS knowledge among migrants and creating an anti-discriminatory social environment.
