Loss in follow-up of PLHA is a major challenge facing health workers. Dealing wirh the challenges, the health workers enhanced their responsibility, focused on the key elements, and carried out the patient-oriented management, and created a concrete outcome of no any case of loss in follow-up in 2009 in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province.
Tracing and turning loss in follow-up into follow-up: In early July, an infection was transferred from Baoding to Shijiazhuang and it was heard that t the person was married in an unknown village of Pingshan County. It is so difficult to find a person without the name of village, Searching for such a person in a county is like looking for a needle in a bottle of hay. In order to contact and follow up the person, cooperated with local staff, the healthcare workers from Shijiazhuang went to Bureau of Civil Affair of Pingshan county to looked over the marriage register of the recent three years and finally found information related to the infected person. s, Health workers followed her up in a timely manner, finding out that she had been pregnant for seven months, and immediately provided PMTCT to her .
The three districts working together to find out the infected person: In the mid of July, a HIV-positive case among blood donators was detected in the provincial blood center After receiving a confirmation report, based on the principle of localized management, the city CDC informed Xinhua District CDC to notify the person and follow up for the first time. Xinhua District gained first-hand information from the blood center, including the telephone and ID card number, firstly, they call the cell phone of the person, however, the cell phone service had been cancelled, then, the staff explored the second channel by using the ID card number, the information of the ID card was associated with Qiaodong District , then asked their counterparts there to assist in the investigation. Local health workers of Qiaodong district visited the police station to check and made sure that the infected person was registered in Qiaodong District, but his domiciliary place had been removed. The clue was lost again, but health workers did not give up. They continually interviewed all relevant people, including neighborhood committees and local policemen, and finally came to know that the person had moved to Chang'an District. They also got the telephone number of the person's father. Thus Chang'an District CDC dialed the number, but nobody answered. Was the clue going to be lost again? When the staff were about to investigate, the registered committee, the telephone number called back. It was called back from the infected person himself.
What is supporting health workers to work with perseverance to find the infected person? It is the sense of responsibility toward the motherland, , society and patients that makes health workers never give up any single PLHA. (Dang Jing, STI/HIV/AIDS Institute of Shijiazhuang CDC, Hebei Province)
