China's Clinical Research on the First Generation of AIDS Vaccine Made Progress

The Major Special Project Office of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) held a news briefing on national major scientific and technological projects on March 2 and announced that research on AIDS vaccine had achieved progress under the major project of "prevention and control of serious infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and virus hepatitis". By the end of 2009, China's first generation of AIDS vaccine – rTV had made steady progress in terms of clinical research.

The 2009 Annual Report on National Major Scientific and Technological Projects, released by the office that day, showed that Phase I of rTV research is divided into Ia and Ib. During Ia, all subjects had expected vaccination reaction and took rTV well without serious side effects. During Ib, trials and clinical visits were finished without serious adverse events. Vaccine for Phase II has been manufactured and is under safety evaluation. Phase II is expected to be launched in the second half of 2010. It is known that rTV is the only replicating-vector HIV vaccine which is in clinical research in the world.

In the meantime, innovative design and transformation of the second generation DNA vaccine, mucosal vaccine, vaccine lymph vector and new vaccine antigen are under way, lending stronger technical superiority and competitiveness to China's second generation of HIV vaccine and preparing personnel and technical reserves for the next stage of clinical trials.

Besides, on the basis of the major project of "prevention and control of serious infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and virus hepatitis" and other national scientific and technological plans, four AIDS vaccine teams and two technology platforms have worked with over 50 scientific research institutions, prestigious universities and vaccine manufacturers in the country to establish China AIDS Vaccine League (CAVI), effectively promoting exchange and cooperation on AIDS vaccine, sharing resources and information and jointly carrying out technological breakthrough.

During the major project of "prevention and control of serious infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and virus hepatitis", the new hepatitis B therapeutic vaccine has demonstrated satisfactory results among 243 hepatitis B patients during Phase II clinical trials. With the support of this major project, Phase III has recruited 517 hepatitis B patients, 400 of which have finalized vaccine therapy, and it is expected that registered clinical trials will be completed by the end of 2010.
