Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Communist Party of China, president of the People's Republic of China and chairman of the Central Military Commission, pays high attention to HIV/AIDS response and visited health facilities and communities in Beijing on the World AIDS Day three times in recent years. At the coming of the 22nd World AIDS Day, General Secretary Hu and Li Keqiang, member with the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice premier of the State Council, came to the National Convention Center on November 30, 2009, where Beijing volunteers launched a weekly AIDS prevention campaign. On behalf of the CPC Central Committee, Hu Jintao expressed sincere greetings to medical staff and volunteers who had contributed to HIV/AIDS prevention and control. To further promote HIV/AIDS prevention and control, Beijing volunteers launched a weekly AIDS prevention campaign with a theme of "Stop AIDS, Keep the Promise" from November 29 to December 5, in a bid to improve the awareness at schools, communities and building sites. This campaign hosted a theme exhibition at the National Convention Center. The center was filled with red ribbons and enthusiastic volunteers. At 9:50 am, Hu Jintao and other officials came into the venue and several volunteers pinned red ribbons for them. Hu Jintao first came to the area of theme exhibition. Before panels and objects, the general secretary carefully listened to the introduction and learned about progress in HIV/AIDS prevention and control in Beijing, especially volunteer's activities. After learning that there are over 50,000 volunteers in Beijing and they have done fruitful work at key settings and among key populations, the general secretary fully affirmed their efforts. Hu Jintao reiterated that HIV/AIDS response is related to people's health and the nation's survival and development. He said the current epidemic situation is arduous and we must mobilize the whole society to facilitate HIV/AIDS prevention and control. At the theme activity area, volunteers were carrying out various activities relating to HIV/AIDS prevention and control. In the analog classroom of peer education, Hu Jintao watched college volunteers disseminating HIV/AIDS information through games. At the area of advisory hotline, Hu Jintao browsed the website of "Capital Red Ribbon" and inquired about the development of the website. He said Internet provides us with a new method in HIV/AIDS prevention and control as Internet is developing very quickly today. He hoped that the website could be run better and better and play a bigger role in HIV/AIDS prevention and control. Officials at UNAIDS China Office also attended the event. Hu Jintao warmly welcomed them and extended sincere gratitude to international organizations and foreign friends for their support and help in China's HIV/AIDS prevention and control. He said HIV/AIDS is our common enemy and HIV/AIDS response is our common responsibility. He said China is willing to strengthen exchange and cooperation with the international community to jointly respond to this challenge and make proactive efforts to effectively promote the cause of HIV/AIDS prevention and control. Hu Jintao cares much about people living with HIV/AIDS. He visited Beijing Ditan Hospital last year and talked with people living HIV/AIDS there. At the theme activity area, through a video phone at the function, the President talked with doctors and patients at Ditan Hospital. Hu was told that the hospital has initiated 21 research programs concerning AIDS treatment and prevention after the President's visit and the number of volunteers working for the hospital has topped 20,000. He also learnt that more people came to have HIV tests voluntarily. Hu felt satisfied and encouraged first-line medical staff to continue to carry forward the humanitarian spirit and constantly improve the level of medical treatment in order to make even bigger contribution to HIV/AIDS prevention and control. Hu also talked to an AIDS patient surnamed Zheng, who he met during last year's visit. Last year, Hu donated RMB 5,000 (US$ 735) to her after learning she had just given birth to a healthy girl. Zheng chatted with Hu over the phone, cuddling her 18-month-old daughter. Hu was glad to see both the mother and daughter were in a sound condition. He said, "I hope you can keep an optimistic attitude to cooperate with the hospital in treatment and get well as soon as possible. I also hope you can create a favorable environment for the happy growth of your daughter. Finally, I wish you and your family a happy life!" After listening to the general secretary's sincere words, Zheng felt warm and kept thanking him. Later Hu came to the theme interaction area. Many young people are registering themselves as volunteers. The general secretary came to inquire about the recruitment of volunteers. "I am very proud of being a volunteer in AIDS prevention programs. As a medical student, I am willing to contribute my share to the cause," Liu Dantong, a postgraduate student of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, told the President at the function. The general secretary said with a smile, "You have a spirit of selfless devotion, experience as a volunteer and medical knowledge. I believe that you surely can become an excellent volunteer." With the warm invitation of volunteers, Hu started to make red ribbons with others. After a red ribbon was made, he posted it on the "Love Wall" and suddenly the heart-shaped pattern made of red ribbons became bright. On the stage, volunteers were singing the song "Smiling Beijing" while playing sign language. After that people got together around the general secretary. Hu Jintao indicated to the volunteers that HIV/AIDS prevention and control in Beijing had achieved remarkable results because of volunteers' efforts. However, he said HIV/AIDS control still faces arduous tasks and much work remains to be done by volunteers. He hoped that volunteers could further promote the spirit of red ribbon to better care about people living with HIV/AIDS, especially eliminating social discrimination. He said we should work together to make unremitting efforts for HIV/AIDS prevention and control. At the end of the event, the general secretary sang the song "Making the World Filled with Love" with volunteers. The melody full of true feelings echoed a long time in the venue… Ling Jihua, secretary of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the CPC and director of the General Office of the Central Committee, also attended the event.
