Peng Liyuan Called for Care for AIDS Orphans

On March 3, Ms. Peng Liyuan, one member of the National Committee of CPPCCand also known as one famous singer, presented the "Proposal for Strengthening Psychosocial Care for AIDS Orphans" at the First Session of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and persuaded other members to sign on  the proposal at the youth association group discussion.

As an advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention in China, Ms. Peng Liyuan has been supporting AIDS orphans for many years. This time, she was trying to getting more support for AIDS orphans in the conference. She presented her proposal at the group discussion and gave a speech. She said, "In fact, the phenomenon of AIDS orphans has attracted wide social attention. However, currently the problems is that at one hand, lots of efforts have been focusing on the implementation of relevant policies  , while on the other hand, a sudden involvement of so many efforts caused formalism, duplication and disorder in some extends. Through my contact with children in the past years, I feel that what matters them most is the care from families, schools and the public. Indifference and discrimination have caused much harm to children."

During the interval between group discussion sessions, Ms. Peng personally asked for each of the members to sign on the proposal which was pretty supportive by the members. She indicated, "I hope I can obtain signatures as much as possible so that this proposal can draw the greatest attentions. Recent years, care and support to AIDS orphans has become my focus. I developed a MTV program specifically on this topic. The number of AIDS orphans is still increasing. I hope I can try my best to provide them with help." After the group discussions, Ms. Peng continued to discuss with the members about the plan for regular visit to AIDS orphans in Henan Province.
